365 Opportunities

2018 is officially gone and the fresh start of 2019 is here. Many of my friends have had a difficult 2018 including myself. For weeks we have all been saying "I can't wait to be done with 2018!" Then this past Sunday, my pastor shared how if we are so focused on wishing the year away to start the next, we will miss the valuable lessons learned from that year. I considered my year and realized it really hasn't been all that bad. I've learned a tremendous amount both personally and professionally. So, for the past few days I have shared this concept with a few friends. It's amazing how sharing with others solidifies the concept in your mind and spirit.

Today I ran across a blog post by Michael Hyatt that focused on last year by asking 7 questions. I decided to answer those questions and share them here.

1. If the last year of your life were a movie, what genre would it be? Drama, romance, adventure, comedy, tragedy, or a combination?

A: All of the above (but mostly a bad sitcom)

2. What were the two or three major themes that kept recurring?

A: Slow down and learn to say no.

3.What did you accomplish this past year that you are the most proud of?

  • Helping our daughters move out and begin their lives on their own.

  • Following through with the goals I set to begin public speaking.

  • Launching English as a second language classes at work and getting to help our students have conversations in English.

4. What do you feel you should have been acknowledged for but weren’t?

  • I'm not really comfortable answering this question.

5. What disappointments or regrets did you experience this past year?

  • I am disappointed that my relationship with my father is almost non existent.

  • I regret not trying harder.

  • I regret not listening to my body more often.

6. What was missing from last year as you look back?

  • Time sitting in the quiet to read.

  • More time outdoors.

  • Time spent with my parents

  • Ballet classes

7. What were the major life-lessons you learned this past year?

  • I think the biggest lesson learned or realized really is that I perfect isn't really a viable option for a standard of living. Instead I choose to give my best effort with a spirit of excellence.

  • Progress over perfection

  • God isn't moved by fear. When I am stressed or afraid, God moves on my behalf when I ask for his help in prayer.

It took me about an hour to answer these. If you take the time to answer these questions, please share your answers with me.

I would like to say I will be more consistent with my blog and publish weekly. But I've learned that life happens and other things often demand my attention. So I won't make that hard line standard of weekly blogging. However, I will try to sit down and share more often.

January 1, 2019 has a fresh clean chalk board. The possibilities are endless and each day is a brand new opportunity. 365 brand new opportunities.
